Where Ray Allen Helps The Heat

Ray Allen is the best 3-point shooter of all-time. He may not be as agile as he once was, but even at this late stage in his career he remains deadly from 2 key court locations: the left corner, and the right wing. The chart above summarizes Ray Allen’s shooting performance for the 2011-2012 regular season.

Statistically speaking, he is best from the left corner, where he makes an amazing 57% of his 3-point attempts; the league averages 36.7% from this same spot. Simply put, Ray Allen from the left corner is the most potent player/spot combination in the NBA.
The 2012 version of Ray Allen will help the Heat in 2 ways. He will obviously make them a better shooting unit, but he will also immediately provide Miami with the best spacing anchor in the NBA; an offensive node 25-feet from the rim that defenses simply cannot abandon. This will make LeBron even better. This will make the Heat even better.

Ray’s two favorite spots are in the left corner, where last year he attempted 14% of his shots, and along the right wing where he took 11% of his shots. These two locations are his favored spots for good reason: he is insanely efficient at both spots. In the left corner, he shoots 57%, along the right wing he hits at 51%. To put that into context, Dwight Howard made 49% of his free throws this year.

The Heat and Ray look like a perfect match. The concerns involve defense and health. As Ray enters the final years of his career, and his ankles and feet start acting their age, he will thrive more as a spot-up shooter and less coming off of screens. Miami will be just fine suiting these needs.
