The Giants' house-cleaning continues. They have released running back Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive tackle Chris Canty, according to two people with knowledge of the moves.
Bradshaw has played seven seasons for the Giants, twice topping 1,000 yards, in 2010 and 2012. He is a Tom Coughlin favorite and a fiery offensive leader, but has been plagued by chronic foot issues, leading to another procedure this offseason to insert a larger screw in his twice-fractured right foot.
Canty has played the past four seasons for the Giants, one of their high-prized free agents back in 2009. Last night at a charity event in New York, he said he had not been approached about a pay cut by the team.
Bradshaw knew this was a possibility, saying on the Giants’ locker clean-out day, “you never know who won’t be back last year, including me.” As of last Saturday, he said he hadn’t heard anything from the team yet but was realistic about his situation.
Bradshaw had two years left on his contract, due $3.75 million in 2013 and $4 million in 2014. His cap numbers were above $6 million each year. Canty was due to earn $6.5 million in 2013, and had an $8.2 million cap hit.
“I can’t say it’s a concern, but it’s always that chance of me not being there next year,” Bradshaw said. “With David (Wilson) there, Andre (Brown), they may have what they’re looking for with them, and may be light on cash. … I hope to be a Giant no matter what, but you never know what happens. It’s all business.”
First-round pick David Wilson came on late in the season, and the Giants are expected to tender restricted free agent Andre Brown, who is coming off a fractured fibula. Pro Football Talk first reported Bradshaw's release.
