L.A. Dodgers Star Yasiel Puig Arrested After Driving 110 mph On Alligator Alley
VIA: Los Angeles Dodger all-star Yasiel Puig was arrested around 9:30 a.m. Saturday on a reckless driving charge after he was caught speeding at 110 mph on Alligator Alley section of Interstate 75, according to Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Greg Bueno.
Troopers say Puig was driving a 2013 Mercedes westbound in Alligator Alley near mile marker 99.
Puig was released from the Collier County Jail on a “self cash bond” about 1 p.m., according to a jailer. “Self cash” does not necessarily mean he paid it himself, however, that also could mean someone came to the lobby and posted the bond for him; it is not clear which happened in Puig’s case, officials said.
The amount of the bond was $500.
Reached by phone Saturday, Lon Rosen, chief marketing officer for the Dodgers, said he was not aware of the arrest and could not comment on it.
Puig, an outfielder, defected from Cuba in 2012 and signed a $42 million contract with the Dodgers. He debuted with the Dodgers on June 3, and was a finalist to make the National League All-Star team.
According to ESPN.com Puig, was arrested in April 2013 in Chattanooga, Tenn., and charged with speeding, reckless driving and driving without proof of insurance. The charges were later dismissed.
A lawsuit seeking $12 million from Puig says he and his mother lied to Cuban authorities about a plan to smuggle the player out of the country.
He finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting this year to fellow Cuban José Fernández of the Miami Marlins.
