Breaking: Nike Counters Under Armour's Offer To Kevin Durant
VIA: It appears that the fate of the continuation of Kevin Durant's footwear line will be finalized soon.
After his contract with Nike ended in late July, the speculation began as to whether Kevin Durant would re-sign with Nike or, test the market and possibly land somewhere else. Under Armour quickly became the top suitor for KD, for many reasons. One of them being their location, close to where Kevin Durant's home is. After a few weeks, a deal was put on the table somewhere between the $265 million and $285 million range. Per the terms of Durant's contract with Nike, they have the right to match any offer. Meaning, Durant can still choose Nike if they don't match, but can't legally choose Under Armour if they do.
Today, sources are reporting that Nike has countered Under Armour's offer and, Kevin Durant will be staying with the Swoosh. Exact details of the new deal with Nike haven't been made public yet, but according to ESPN sources, Durant, who is scheduled to make $41.2 million over the next two years, should make more via the Nike deal through base pay and royalties. Based on market retail tracking firm SportsOneSource, Durant's signature KD model generated $175 million last year. Sources also reported that not only is business on the rise, but by raising the retail price and opening up wider distribution, Nike could justify this deal.
While we await official details, such as how long this deal is for, what do think of this deal? Are you happy to see Kevin Durant stay under Nike or, would you have liked to see him with Under Armour. Stick with us here at Sole Collector as we will post more information as it becomes available. Best Story Of The Day: The Rock Met Hornswoggle And Thought He Was A Make-A-Wish Kid
VIA: Leprechaun: Origins star and WWE joke fulcrum Hornswoggle gave an interview with Alternative Nation on Thursday and revealed what might be my new favorite WWE backstage anecdote ever: Hornswoggle called The Rock out for having notes written on his wrist that one time because of pre-existing heat involving Rock thinking Hornswoggle was a Make-A-Wish child. I KNOW, RIGHT?
Straight from the cow’s mouth:
Oh yeah, I called him out on having his notes on his wrist tape. His song that night, he had it on his wrist tape, and Cena went out there and free styled, and I called [Rock] out. I will fully admit, I went out on a limb, and probably said something I shouldn’t have, when going into WrestleMania Rock vs. Cena was the biggest match we’d had in a long time. Maybe I shouldn’t have tweeted that, but I meant it. I have been known a lot to keep my mouth shut, but there are certain things that I really take heart to, and that’s one of them. If you were to come out here and say you are free styling and you sing this song when you have everything written down, then you’re going to try to punk out one of my friends, John Cena, who is free styling and still killing you. Then he approached me about it about 2 weeks later. First off, I don’t think this story has ever gotten out there, so you’ve got an exclusive:
The Rock: Why you got to call me out like that?
Hornswoggle: The first time I met you, you thought I was a Make a Wish kid.
The Rock: What!?
Hornswoggle: Yeah, I met you backstage the night you came back in [Anaheim], when you were revealed as the guest host for WrestleMania, and you thought I was a Make a Wish kid. You tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘Did you have a good time tonight buddy?’ Then you walked off and you realized it, then you said to Big Show, ‘Hornswoggle thinks I thought he was a Make a Wish kid, and I did think he was.’
… So I don’t pull any punches now when I say things about you. Because you are so out of the loop, I’ve been on TV for 8 years now, and you thought I was a visitor?
The Rock: Yeah, yeah I did. Not gonna lie.
That’s such an incredible collection of incidents zippering into one. I really hope the next time Rock shows up he bumps into Hornswoggle backstage and is all, “hey, aren’t you that Brandon Stroud guy that writes on the Internet? You’re a mark!” and Hornswoggle just seethes and seethes.

A Farewell to the Air Jordan III
VIA: In the fall of 1988, I was a junior at Long Island’s Smithtown High School East trying out for the school’s volleyball team. I was already six feet tall, and could jump a little. Making the team didn’t seem like a formality or anything, but I thought I had a good a shot as anyone. I just had one concern, which I brought up with the coach in his office before tryouts had even ended—would I be allowed to wear Air Jordan IIIs during games? This seemed important. I’d never owned a pair of Air Jordans before, and these were definitely going to be my first.
As it turned out, my concerns were unfounded. I didn’t make the team, and I didn’t get the Air Jordans either. Instead I wound up getting a pair of Air Jordan IIs that were being cleared out for $70—the IIIs would have to wait.
Fortunately, I wouldn’t have to wait long. In 1994 and 1995, Nike famously re-issued Air Jordans 1 through III, essentially kicking off the concept of retro sneakers. I, a broke recent college grad at the time, made some tough decisions and bought one of each style—black/red IIIs, II highs, and black/cement IIIs—as soon as they became available. A few months later, some were still available for as little as $20. I didn’t care. I had mine.
Last night at an event introducing the “remastered” Air Jordan Retros for Spring ‘15, much was discussed, mostly about a return to a classic method of sneaker making that was almost lost in an era where most basketball sneakers aren’t even made from leather anymore. But Jordan Brand VP of Footwear David Schecter made another announcement towards the end that nearly overshadowed everything else—the Air Jordan III would be going back in the vault, with no imminent return on the horizon. And seeing that the brand plans as much as two years out, it could be the shoe’s 30th anniversary (2018) before we see it again.
On some level, this is incredibly disappointing. The III has long been a favorite of nearly every Jordan aficionado, and, as Tinker Hatfield’s first Air Jordan, its significance to the entire line can’t be understated. A fresh pair of Air Jordan IIIs is key to nearly every sneaker rotation. And long-awaited drops like a black/cement ‘88 or mocha re-up will have to be awaited for a bit longer. But in reality, this is probably something that needs to happen.
On one episode of Quickstrike, I proposed that Nike cease production of the iconic Air Force 1, at least for a year. I said this mostly to get a rise out of my Air Force 1 loving co-host, but I also thought it was an idea that made some sense. Yes, it would take a consistent moneymaker out of the lineup, but it would also make people rethink an incredible sneaker design that’s come to be taken for granted. The Air Jordan III finds itself in a very similar position, albeit on a smaller scale. The other day I saw a link to a list of the 23 best Air Jordan III colorways. Twenty-three? When the Air Jordan III originally released in 1988, there were four. Which, at the time, seemed like plenty.
So here we are at the end (for now) and we didn’t even know it. The last Air Jordan III for the foreseeable future will be the Sport Blue joints that just dropped, unless you count the Roger Federer Vapor 9 Tours, which make an interesting bookend to the white/cement IIIs that Michael Jordan debuted in the ‘88 Dunk Contest. Personally, my biggest regret is that we tweeted out the news as soon as we heard it—we should have collectively made a pact not to tell anyone until we went to Flight Club today and cleaned out the stock of ‘88s. Sneaker insider trading, if you will. If the prices go up, well, it’ll be understandable.
When the III does return (and the more I think about it, the more likely Spring ‘18 seems right), it will be “remastered” like the rest of the Air Jordan retro line, and should be the closest to the original iteration. It promises to be worth the wait. In the meantime, you might want to stock up.

Good News, Everyone, Jim Kelly’s Cancer Is Gone
“We have come away from our checkup visit in NYC encouraged and hopeful. Preliminary scan results have necessitated the need for biopsies to be done in order to confirm what we hope to be true…that the cancer has been eradicated. We will not know the outcome until this procedure is completed. And so… We continue to PRAY, rejoice, live…wait and trust GOD who holds ALL things together. God, who is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End and every moment in between. In the midst of it all, I know He’s got this. Thank you for praying! Thank you for holding us up during this time. We are so grateful for you! #prayersforjk #kellytough”

Floyd Mayweather Says Artists Like Nelly, 50 Cent And T.I. 'Come And Go ... But I'm Still Here'
VIA: LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather seems to have more fights against music personalities than boxers these days, and while he's ingrained in both communities, he reigns supremely and without defeat in only one.
Rappers Nelly, 50 Cent and T.I. all have chided Mayweather since the pound-for-pound king's last fight — in interviews, via social media, and in person — primarily over who's dating whom, and if so why.
"I don't really focus on nothing like that," Mayweather said. "I'm relevant. I'm relevant. My life is the (expletive). I'm something to talk about."
Mayweather said hip-hop stars seem to try to boost their public appeal by linking themselves to him via controversial methods, like when he was confronted by Clifford "T.I." Harris early on the morning of May 25, producing a minor scuffle at a Fatburger restaurant on the Las Vegas strip.
The incident apparently was spurred by the rapper's wife, Tameka "Tiny" Harris, posting an Instagram picture of herself with Mayweather's daughter, Iyanna.
Mayweather toyed with T.I. over whether his relationship with the rapper's wife was intimate — both he and Tiny ultimately dismissed that speculation — but he was not happy about the incident at a favorite eating place.
At essence, he contends that the celebrity-on-celebrity confrontation was the product of a crude marketing effort.
"What's so crazy is this: You know, when people are not relevant, and they're not moving units like they were once moving ... you've got to realize, I've been relevant for 18 years," Mayweather said.
Piggybacking his name is what hip-hop artists seek when confronting him, he added.
"God has blessed me with an unbelievable talent, with fast feet, fast hands, unbelievable defense and a very, very sharp mind. So I'm thankful for that. Of course, hip-hop artists, they come and go. They come and go. But I'm still here," Mayweather said.
Mayweather fights Marcos Maidana in a Sept. 13 rematch perhaps fueled, in part, by the pound-for-pound king's own questionable focus in their May 3 first fight, after he took to social media late on fight week to explain his breakup from his former fiancee, Shantel Jackson.
Jackson now dates Nelly (real name, Cornell Haynes Jr.), who recently chided Mayweather for not graduating high school.
Mayweather, in turn, claimed Jackson told him she is dating Nelly solely to advance her career. Jackson and the rapper reportedly are in production on a reality show.
Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson didn't miss a chance to get in his own digs at Mayweather via Twitter in July, first warning him that a relationship with Tiny might get him shot by T.I., and later posting that Nelly "really took your lady Champ."
Mayweather, the world's highest-paid athlete, chalked up his estranged friend's comments to jealousy.
"A lot of times, you see a lot of these rap artists, they rap about certain things, but I really live it," Mayweather said. "Every home that I have is paid for, every car that I have is paid for, and I am a hundred-million-dollar man. I mean, this is the truth, it's not a lie.
"I mean, if these guys claim that they're doing certain numbers and certain units, then we'll see. My fight's already sold out. You could take me anywhere. You could take me to the moon, and believe me, everybody's going to try to take a trip to the moon to watch me fight."
