This Jeff Koons-Inspired GIF by Michael Green Is Being Sold for $5,800 on eBay
Last November, Jeff Koons set a new "World Auction Record for a Living Artist" when his Balloon Dog sculpture sold for $58,405,000 at auction. Inspired by the sale, artist Michael Green created the Balloon Dog Deflated GIF (above) and decided to sell it on eBay for $5,800. If someone buys the art before the auction ends on September 8, it will become the most expensive GIF ever sold.
In an interview with Dazed, Green said that there is no reason why his art can't sell for the Buy It Now price. "Why not? I did some research on unconventional eBay sellings and found somebody who needed $230 in rent so he made a drawing of a seven-legged spider, put it up on eBay and it made $10,000." Green called his price "reasonable" and referenced the sale of a GIF for $1,300.
We know that digital art has been on the up and up for a while now, but $5,800 is a lot of cash for a file depicting someone else's art being destroyed. Right now no one has bid on it, but there's still 24 hours to go. We'll see if Michael can break an art record.
