WrestleMania 31 Was The Biggest Gate In WWE History, And Network Subscriptions Are Up Big Time
VIA: WrestleMania 31 was successful creatively, but what about financially? The build to the show was one of the least inspiring in company history, so many were expecting the show to perform below expectations. Well, turns out that wasn’t the case.
WrestleMania 31 brought in the largest live gate in WWE history, grossing $12.6 million. The previous record was held by WrestleMania 29, which brought in $12.3 million at the gate. WWE also set a Levi’s Stadium record with 76,976 fans in attendance, although there is some speculation that WWE used some, uh, creative counting techniques to get to that number. Still, $12.6 million is a lot of friggin’ money.
More importantly, WrestleMania 31 was behind a major surge in WWE Network subscribers. In today’s post-WrestleMania press conference, Vince McMahon said the Network has surpassed 1.3 million subscribers. This is a very crucial milestone, as 1.3 million subscribers was said to be the number WWE needed to hit in order to start turning a profit on the Network.
In other press conference-related news, Vince acknowledged the criticism of the Road to WrestleMania, but brushed it off, saying the company knew what they were doing. He also bragged about plucking Sting from “obscurity” and making him into major WWE attraction.
Basically, let it never be forgotten who and what Vince McMahon is. He’s not a writer, and he’s not a creative genius no matter how many times he says it. He’s a promoter, and a damn good one. WrestleMania 31 was definitely another feather in promoter Vince McMahon’s cap.
